The process of access and admission of students will be carried out in accordance with the provisions of Royal Decree 412/2014, of June 6, which establishes the basic regulations for admission procedures to official university education.
Ways and requirements of access and admission
- To be in possession of an official Spanish university degree or another degree issued by a higher education institution of the European Higher Education Area, which authorizes, in the issuer country, to access Master's degrees.
- Likewise, graduates of educational systems outside the European Higher Education Area can access the Master without the need for homologation of their degrees, upon verification by the UPM that the graduate demonstrate a level of education equivalent to the corresponding official Spanish university degree, and that the degree authorizes in the issuing country to access postgraduate education. This way of access will not imply, in any case, the homologation of tany previous title that in possession of the applicant, nor its recognition for other purposes than that of studying the Master's degree.
- It will also be an admission requirement to have a B2 level of English or equivalent. If the student does not have an official accreditation, the Master Commission will evaluate this knowledge jointly during the candidate selection phase.
Applicants to the master's degree must have a bachelor's degree, university degree or equivalent, preferably in Biotechnology, Biology, Genetics, Biomedicine, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Pharmacy or in other disciplines related to the master's degree linked to biosciences, and to sciences such as Mathematics and Statistics. Applicants for the master's degree may also be in possession of the degree of technician, graduate, or equivalent, in computer engineering. Graduates in Agricultural, Food or Biomedical engineering, in Systems Biology and in Chemistry can also be considered.
Admission profile
For those students who want to start their studies in the Master's degree in Computational Biology, the following applicant profile is recommended. Applicants for the master's degree must have a bachelor's degree, degree or equivalent, preferably in:
- Biotechnology,
- Biology,
- Genetics,
- Biomedicine,
- Biochemistry,
- Molecular biology,
- Pharmacy
Other optional profiles are:
- Disciplines linked to biosciences and sciences such as Mathematics and Statistics.
- Applicants to the master can also be in possession of the title of technician, graduate, graduate or equivalent, in computer engineering. Graduates in engineering can also be considered as optional profiles: Agricultural, Food, Biomedical, Biological Systems and Chemistry.
The Academic Commission of the Master will be able to establish formative complements that will serve to level the knowledge of all the students who access to the master. These training complements will be of 6 ECTS and according to the student profile:
- Students who lack training in the field of biosciences, as the case of engineers, mathematicians, statisticians, among others, must compulsorily take the subject "Biology for Computational Sciences" (6 ECTS).
- Students who have a background in biosciences, but lack computer skills and programming should take the subject of "Programming for Computational Biology" (6 ECTS).
Other training complements may be chosen exceptionally, according to the student's profile, between subjects currently taught in the UPM Biotechnology Degree and that cover other basic aspects of Computational Biology, Genomics, Structural Biology, Molecular Evolution, Statistics, Computer Systems, Databases and Machine Learning.
